Frontier Insurance
Holding an International Insurance Certificate (CIS, formerly the Green Card) is compulsory to prove that your vehicle is duly insured (only in those foreign countries where it is required). However, your insurer is not obliged to give you what was formerly called the Green Card, and, therefore, you need the alternative: Frontier Insurance.
How to obtain it, what it covers or where you can get it if you travel to Morocco or if you are going to drive in Spain with your vehicle registered outside the EEA are some of the key points you will find if you keep reading.
What is it for?
Frontier Insurance is, ultimately, a temporary International Insurance Certificate, or in other words it is what was formerly known as the temporary “Green Card”.

What does Frontier Insurance cover?
It covers compulsory third-party liability, in Spain and the rest of the EEA within the limits in force in the country visited.
What does it not cover?
It is important to stress that it does not cover roadside assistance for your vehicle, defence costs, etc. It is a temporary “third-party” insurance policy to drive with cover in the country where it is applied for.
When do I need it?
You will need to purchase it when you enter with your vehicle a country outside the EEA and whenever you do not hold a CIS issued by your insurance company.
One of the road trips where this Frontier Insurance is most used is when we travel to our neighbouring country, Morocco.
The Frontier Insurance System works in a similar way to an insurance company: the cost is calculated, the premium is charged and the documentation is issued. If the vehicle subsequently causes an accident within the policy’s period of validity, the damage caused to third parties is paid.
If you are going to travel to any of the countries that have joined the System, I recommend that you look for information on how to obtain Frontier Insurance through the National Insurers’ Bureaux of the country where you will be driving. Remember that you only need Frontier Insurance if you have not obtained the CIS, International Insurance Certificate; as you know, colloquially, some people still call it the insurance Green Card
I'm going to travel to Morocco,where do I get my Frontier Insurance?
This is one of the questions we are asked most. Obviously, the best option would be to have an International Insurance Certificate, the Green Card, from your motor insurance policy, but if you do not have it, you can drive in Morocco by purchasing Frontier Insurance.
Purchasing Frontier Insurance to enter Morocco is straightforward; you can do it online or in person, whichever you prefer.
If you prefer to do it in person, simply visit one of these official sales points for this “Frontier Insurance”, with your contact details (address and telephone) in each city: MARRAKECH, RABAT, AGADIR, CASABLANCA, FES, SAFI, TANGER, BENI MELLAL, EL JADIDA, KENITRA, KHOURIBGA, MEKNES, OUJDA, TANGER and TETOUAN.
