Border Insurance
This system guarantees that vehicles from outside EEA can obtain valid insurance cover at the bordersWhat is Border Insurance?
All vehicles that come from countries out of European Economic Area (EEA) shall access Spanish territory (and consequently the EEA) with a valid green card. To do so, they can either get one from their country of origin or if not, they must get one as soon as they enter Spanish territory.
Such green cards issued to foreign vehicles in the Spanish border zones are called Border Insurance (in Spanish abbreviated to “SEFRON”)
Border Insurance Characteristics
It only covers, and for a limited period, the minimum Civil Liability demanded by each country of the EEA. As such, it doesn’t cover roadside assistance damage to your own vehicle, defense costs, etc. It’s a temporary insurance for fixed durations of:
- 15 days
- 30 days
- 90 days
- 180 days

The corresponding code for Spanish insurance company (BOX 4 on the Green Card) always fallows the Fallowing Format E 40000.
